Schneider Sustainability Report 2017 – 2018

01 Introduction Sustainability at Schneider Electric

10 commitments for a sustainable future

With the challenges of climate change and the global megatrends made clear, the next steps also become apparent: we must act; we must take responsibility; and we must begin with ourselves. At COP21 in 2015 we unveiled our 10 sustainability commitments. The goal of these pledges is to ensure that Schneider Electric’s entire ecosystem — from our own operations to that of our suppliers, customers, and partners — becomes carbon neutral by 2030. With this in mind, we have now renewed and strengthened our 10 sustainability commitments:

1. Avoid the emission of 100 million metric tons of CO2 on our customers’ end, thanks to our offers (2018 – 2020).

2. Use 80% renewable electricity by 2020 and 100% by 2030; and continue to drive energy efficiency toward doubling our energy productivity in our sites over 2005 – 2030 period.

3. Achieve 75% of our turnover under the new Green Premium™ program (2018 – 2020).

4. Avoid 100,000 metric tons of primary resource consumption through ECOFIT,™ product recycling, and take-back programs (2018 – 2020).

5. Use 100% cardboard and pallets for transport packing from recycled or certified sources by 2020 (Q4).

6. Reach 200 sites labeled Toward Zero Waste to Landfill by 2020 (2015 – 2020) and recover 100% of our industrial waste by 2030 (2015 – 2030).

7. Reduce CO2 emissions from the transport of our goods by 3.5% per year (annually since 2012).

8. Facilitate access to lighting and communication with low-carbon solutions for 50 million underprivileged people by 2025 (2009 – 2025).

9. Propose alternatives to the use of SF6 gas by 2020 (2015 – 2020) and eliminate SF6 from our products by 2025.

10. Invest €10 billion in innovation and R&D for sustainability in 10 years (2015 – 2025).

Accelerating our transition to carbon neutrality

Recently we announced more details on how we plan to achieve carbon neutrality. Schneider has joined RE100 and EP100 — two global, collaborative initiatives of influential businesses led by The Climate Group and committed to climate action.

We will shift to 100% renewable electricity.

RE100 is uniting more than 100 influential businesses committed to 100% renewable electricity. Schneider has committed to shift to 100% renewable electricity by 2030 with an intermediary objective of 80% by 2020. We will accomplish this by both increasing on-site renewable energy projects across multiple sites around the globe — including factories, distribution centers, offices — and procuring renewable electricity from external providers.

We will double our energy productivity.

EP100 is made up of businesses that pledge to double their energy productivity. Schneider will work to double energy productivity by 2030 against a 2005 baseline. We’re setting an ambitious target to double the economic output from every unit of energy consumed.

We’re also strengthening our commitment to measurable targets and transparency:

  • Before 2020, Schneider, along with more than 400 other companies, will work with the Science Based Targets initiative to review our own resource decoupling strategies and trajectories against the +2 °C target by 2100 and a one-planet compatible global economy.
  • Schneider will provide full visibility and transparency for our sustainability targets through the quarterly publication of our Schneider Sustainability Impact statement.
